An In-Depth Look at the Qualification Process for Field Hockey Teams Eyeing the Paris 2024 Olympics
Hockey has been an integral part of the Olympics since 1908, and its competitive fervor has only grown with time. As we edge closer to the Paris 2024 Olympics, hockey teams from across the globe are gearing up for their journey towards Olympic qualification and the chance to etch their names in history.
To secure a spot in the hockey tournament, teams must navigate through various regional and international tournaments. As we eagerly anticipate the commencement of the tournament, let's delve deeper into the journey that hockey teams will embark upon to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Qualified teams
The competition will be fierce as only 12 men's and 12 women's teams will ultimately make it to Paris, with the host country, France, automatically receiving a spot in each event. The journey to Olympic qualification for the both the men's and women's tournaments consist of two pathways: regional tournaments, and the FIH Olympic Qualification Tournaments. Let's take a closer look at each of these pathways and the teams involved.

Regional Tournaments
The regional tournaments are one of the primary pathways for teams to qualify for the Olympics. The top-ranked team for each gender from each regional tournament will earn a spot at Paris 2024, with the regions being Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, and Oceania.

FIH Olympic Qualification Tournaments
The final pathway for teams to qualify for the Olympics is through the Olympic Qualification Tournaments, which will take place in January and February 2024. A total of 16 teams per gender will compete in two separate tournaments, with the top three teams from each tournament qualifying for Paris 2024. The teams that will participate in these tournaments will be determined based on their performance in the regional tournaments
August 2023. The winner of the 2023 African Qualification Tournament for each gender will qualify for Paris 2024. The next highest ranked men's team will participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments.
20 October-5 November 2023. The winner of the men's and women's hockey tournaments at the 2023 Pan American Games will qualify for Paris 2024. The next two highest ranked men's teams and the next three highest women's teams will participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments.
23 September-8 October 2023. The winner of the men's and women's hockey tournaments at the 2022 Asian Games will qualify for Paris 2024. The next five highest ranked men's teams and the next four highest ranked women's teams will participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments.
18-27 August 2023. The highest placed eligible team in the men's and women's tournaments at the 2023 EuroHockey Championship will qualify for Paris 2024. The next seven highest ranked men's teams and the next eight highest ranked women's teams will participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments. Scotland and Wales are not eligible for Olympic qualification. England will be considered for Great Britain's qualification. France have already qualified for Paris 2024 as hosts.
10-13 August 2023. The winner of the men's and women's 2023 Oceania Cup will qualify for Paris 2024. The runner-up in each tournament will participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification Tournaments.
January and February 2024. There will be 2 FIH Hockey Olympic Qualification tournaments per gender, consisting of 8 teams in each tournament. The top eligible teams at each regional tournaments for each gender not already qualified for Paris 2024 will be invited to participate in the qualification tournaments. The top 3 teams in each of these Olympic Qualification Tournaments will qualify for Paris 2024.
