Unveiling the Pathways to Olympic Glory: A Comprehensive Look at Water Polo Qualification for Paris 2024
Water polo, a thrilling and physically demanding sport, has been a captivating fixture at the Olympic Games since 1900. As we approach the Paris 2024 Olympics, water polo teams from around the world are embarking on an arduous journey in their quest for Olympic glory.
The road to Olympic qualification in water polo consists of various pathways, with only 12 men's teams and 10 women's teams ultimately securing a spot in the tournament. Let's dive deeper into each of these pathways and explore the teams involved.
Qualified teams
As the host nation, France automatically qualifies for both the men's and women's water polo tournaments. The top two teams from the 2023 World Aquatics Championships for each gender will qualify for Paris 2024 along with the top team for each gender at the 2022 Asian Games, the 2024 European Championships and the 2023 Pan American Games. The highest ranked teams from Africa and Oceania at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships will also qualify for Paris 2024 along with the four highest ranked teams for each gender not already qualified for Paris 2024.
16-29 July 2023. The top two men's and women's teams at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships will qualify for Paris 2024. As both men's and women's teams from France have already qualified for Paris 2024 as hosts, the next best ranked team qualify if France finishes inside the top two.
2-18 February 2024. A total of six teams for each gender will qualify for Paris 2024 from the 2024 World Aquatics Championships. They will be selected in the following order:
The highest ranked team for each gender from each continent (Africa and Oceania) without a team already qualified for Paris 2024.
The four highest ranked teams (irrespective of continent) for each gender not already qualified for Paris 2024.
